Course Overview
British fashion education is now regarded as among the best in the world and Cambridge School of Art offers a creative and dynamic learning environment where you will be encouraged to develop your own creative path, supported by our highly experienced teaching staff.
Offering a choice of study routes, this degree will introduce you to fashion, textiles and costume design, together with a range of related disciplines. The costume route explores the design and production of costume for film, television and theatre.
The fashion route aims to give you an understanding of the materials, processes and techniques involved in design, with a particular focus on the methods used within the industry.
The textiles element of the fashion route explores craft, design, and textile fashion practice with particular focus on the design of fabric and surface textiles.
Whichever route you choose, this course offers an excellent opportunity to get closer to the issues and challenges in modern fashion design. A focus on the practical elements of fashion, including cutting techniques, applied decoration and illustration, means you will be well equipped with the kind of skills much valued by potential employers.

Level 1 (Year 1)
You will be introduced to fashion illustration techniques including computer-aided design,
pattern construction, primary research, drawing and contextual studies. Teaching will comprise
of formal lectures, informal seminars, workshop sessions and one-to-one tutorials according
to your individual project work.
Level 2 (Year 2)
You will be encouraged to interact effectively within a team, and manage your time and
learning resources in a professional manner. A 60 credit core module enables competitions
to be undertaken.
Level 3 (Year 3)
You are able to focus on a particular specialism such as menswear, childrenswear, or an area
such as eveningwear, lingerie, or a personalised project. The Major Project module provides
the opportunity to research and produce a collection of garments around a chosen theme.

Facilities
The facilities open to students undertaking this course include life drawing, suites of computers using Photoshop, Illustrator and fashion specific computers with Gerber software. Training is provided. Together with these facilities, the department offers a variety of industrial sewing and finishing machines, a foil press and knitting machine

In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise for Art and Design, 70% of our research work was ‘internationally recognised’, ‘internationally excellent’ and, in some cases, ‘world-leading’. As a result, our income from the RAE to support our research is double our 2002 allocation.
The MDes is a four-year integrated Masters programme, enabling you to to opt for combined Undergraduate and Masters level study over four years rather than undergraduate study over three years. The MDes is distinguished by an emphasis upon practical mastery in a professional context.

Although of particular value to anyone wishing to pursue a career in fashion design, this programme will also provide good preparation for entry into a number of roles within the field of art and design. Students during the last year have participated in fashion shows, commercial competitions, and exhibitions showcasing their work to an ever widening audience.
Students work on building practical and conceptual skills while developing their visual communication in preparation for industry. Areas covered include design, manufacture and decoration for single pieces and ranges. Uniquely, students undertaking this course have the opportunity to work as costume designers on a variety of theatre and film projects produced within our University.
